Employees arriving at the McDonald’s in Burlington were met by a hatchet-wielding man attempting to break into the store’s safe, the Boone County Sheriff’s Office reported Sunday.

Deputies responded to 5985 Centennial Circle in Burlington after the suspect allegedly burglarized the fast food location and subsequently robbed it.

The first call to law enforcement came in at 4:43 a.m. as the employees fled the building with the robber taking the contents of the safe. Just two doors down, a deputy was working on reports when the call came. He and responding deputies surrounded the building and when the suspect walked outside, he was taken into custody.

Blake Meyers, 19, of Florence, was arrested and is charged with first degree robbery and first degree burglary. He had been an employee at the store, and according to a news release, did not utter a word to arriving employees for fear that they would recognize his voice.

He allegedly gestured with the hatched until the employees gave him access to the safe, the sheriff’s office said.
