A group of local breast cancer survivors is sharing a side of survivorship that often goes unseen. Their new photo exhibition, “The Other Side of Breast Cancer,” features portraits focused on survivors’ backs, highlighting the physical and emotional scars left behind by the disease.

The Kentucky Thorough-Breasts Dragon Boat Team, a growing community of cancer survivors and supporters in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky, announced that their photo exhibition will debut on Friday, June 26, at the Pendleton Art Center in Cincinnati. The free event is slated to last from 5 to 9 p.m. Donations to the dragon boat team are appreciated.

This exhibition showcases the work of experienced photographer Bryn Weller, featuring portraits of breast cancer survivors who paddle with the Kentucky Thorough-Breasts. The goal of the project is to shift attention from the physical effects of breast cancer to the resilience, recovery and community developed through survivorship.

The Kentucky Thorough-Breasts Dragon Boat Team, founded in 2008, is the area’s only breast cancer survivor dragon boat team and is part of a global network of more than 350 similar teams.

In August, team members will travel to Aix-les-Bains, France, to participate in the International Breast Cancer Paddling Commission Participatory Dragon Boat Festival, an event that brings together breast cancer survivor dragon boat teams from around the world.
