Elder (OH) 30, Highlands 27
Elder escaped Fort Thomas with a victory in this back and forth affair.
Two lead changes took place in the fourth with Bluebirds Kai Anderson tying the game at 27 with 1:18 to play. Elder drove down and kicked the game-winning field goal with four seconds left from the leg of Tyler Homan on a 30-yard attempt.
This one had no shortage of explosive, game-changing plays. Highlands jumped out 9-0 thanks to a safety and a 69-yard touchdown pass from Bryce Armstrong to John Feldbruegge.
Elder answered with 20 unanswered to take a 20-9 lead with 9:22 left in the third. It was the Bluebirds turn to respond from there, scoring 15 straight to take a 24-20 lead with 5:38 to play.
Elder quickly answered when Kaden Estep hit Andrew Lyman for a 83-yard touchdown strike to make it 27-24 with 4:53 remaining.
Armstrong threw for 220 yards and a touchdown while also running for 76 yards and a score. Tayden Lorenzen had 73 rushing yards and a touchdown and added four receptions for 42 yards. Feldbruegge was the leading receiver with five grabs for 168 yards and the touchdown.
Yardage was fairly comparable, Elder gained 437 yards to Highlands 389. The Bluebirds defense tallied the safety, four sacks and seven tackles for loss.
Estep threw for 390 yards and two touchdowns for the Panthers, also running for 66 yards and a touchdown. Lyman snagged six passes for 187 yards and two touchdowns.
Highlands (6-2) hosts Mason County next week.
Dayton 42, Bellevue 6
The Greendevils led 36-0 at halftime to get this one to a running clock for the second half.
Malachi Kennedy had four first half touchdowns in the victory as Dayton now sits at 7-0.
They’ll host Newport Central Catholic next week in an important district battle. Bellevue (1-5) hosts Newport.
Ryle 13, Campbell County 6
The Raiders (3-4) took a 10-0 lead into halftime thanks to a 43-yard touchdown pass from Brody Smith to Cruze Sauley.
The Camels (3-4) answered with a touchdown drive out of the half to make it 10-6. Jack Basinger’s second field goal of the night made it 13-6 Raiders with 4:15 to play.
The Camels drove down to the Raiders 28, but were unable to advance any further from there. They host Simon Kenton next week. Ryle hosts Great Crossing.
Cathedral (IN) 28, Covington Catholic 20
The Colonels led 14-13 at the half and had a chance to take the lead with 2:35 left, but failed to convert the extra point, leaving it 21-20.
After CovCath (4-4) recovered the ensuing onside kick, they failed to advance and Cathedral added a touchdown late with 38 seconds left.
The Colonels play at Harrison County next week.
Great Crossing 21, Simon Kenton 14
The two traded scores twice to get it to 14-14 as Simon Kenton tied it up with 7:26 to play, but Great Crossing quickly answered a minute later for what would be the game-winning score.
Simon Kenton (3-4) plays at Campbell County next week.
Beechwood 62, St. Henry 0
The Tigers led 28-0 after one and 49-0 at halftime in improving to 7-0 on the season.
They host winless Gallatin County next week.
Walton-Verona 58, Gallatin County 0
Walton-Verona’s (5-2) fifth win of the season ties last year’s total as they are now two wins away from hosting a home playoff game.
In order to do so, they’ll need to beat Owen County in Owenton next week and St. Henry at home the following week.
