The Camels concluded what head coach Davey Johnson called a heck of a day with a huge win over a top tier 9th Region opponent hours after the Camels drew the one seed in the 37th District Tournament.
“We beat Notre Dame last week and Ryle this week. I didn’t know that would happen,” Johnson admitted. “(Their confidence) is through the roof right now. That’s one of the big things when I was hired on was getting rid of that losing mentality and understanding they have talent and they can win those games. We were down 14 at half and we were able to claw our way back.”
Izzy Jayasuriya led the Camels scoring 12 points making 5-of-6 free throws in the fourth quarter. Johnson said she also had some crucial rebounds as all 10 players that saw action for Campbell County contributed.
Johnson also credited Campbell County eighth grader Stella Brockman for coming into the game halfway through the third quarter and not coming out. Brockman scored all eight of her points in the fourth quarter and had to guard Ryle’s three top scorers in Quinn Eubank, Sarah Baker and Jaelyn Jones at certain points during the game.
“It feels pretty amazing winning against that good of a team,” Brockman said. “We go deep into our bench and everyone is ready to play as soon as they get in. I was ready to play. You have to stay confident in your shot and just play as hard as possible. As long as you play hard and do what you can to contribute to the team, then you know you’re doing okay.”
Eubank led Ryle with 17 points and Jones scored 11. Campbell County held Baker to seven points after she entered the game averaging 13.1 points per game. Johnson said Macie Peoples mostly guarded Baker.
