The Boone County Public Library is celebrating the United States’ 250th anniversary by honoring some of the country’s foremost trailblazers.

The Boone County Library is hosting “Celebrating America’s 250th” on Sunday, June 28, at 2 p.m. at its main library, 1786 Burlington Pike, in Burlington. The event will celebrate the near-completion of two outdoor projects, Words We Rise: Celebrating American Trailblazers, which depicts several national heroes and trailblazers, and Patriots, Pioneers & Places that Transformed the County: History Walk.

The ceremony will include remarks from project partners and community leaders, followed by an opportunity for visitors to explore both exhibits. The ‘Words We Rise’ project includes eight mural panels, each 8′ x 16, featuring important icons from U.S. history.

“These projects create new opportunities for residents and visitors to engage with history in a meaningful way,” Boone County Public Library Executive Director Carrie Herrmann said in a news release. “As our nation approaches its 250th anniversary, we are proud to provide spaces that encourage learning, reflection and community connection.”

Earlier this year, the library system received a $25,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to support the mural project. The state also contributed to the project through the Kentucky Historical Society and the Kentucky Arts Council— the state arts agency — using state tax dollars appropriated by the Kentucky General Assembly.
