County rivals Simon Kenton and Dixie Heights met seeking their first win of the season.

The Pioneers (1-1) built the lead in the first half and held off the host Colonels (0-2), 50-42.

Both teams tried to be balanced offensively. Junior guard Travis Krohman and senior center Gabe Dynes led the Pioneers scoring 16 and 10 points, respectively.

“We had a couple good practices under our belt and had to look in the mirror a little bit,” said Trent Steiner, Simon Kenton head coach. “I was glad that our kids bounced back from the loss on Tuesday night.”

Steiner said the Pioneers had success with their 2-3 zone defense. Junior Hudson Blank led Dixie Heights with 26 points.

Simon Kenton travels to Holmes (0-1) on Monday for a 7:30 p.m. game. Dixie Heights travels to Conner (0-2) on Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. game.

George Rogers Clark 80, Campbell County 61

The Camels (1-1) headed south to Winchester and found out where they stood against the defending state champion Cardinals (2-0) in a key early-season 10th Region matchup.

Campbell County had eight different players score, led by senior forward Ayden Hamilton with 17 points and sophomore guard Jaidan Combs scoring 12 with senior guard Jake Gross adding 10.

Campbell County hosts Cooper (0-1) for a non-region battle on Saturday at 4 p.m., at the Campbell County Middle School.

The Bluebirds evened their record at 1-1 with a win to open the Donna Murphy Classic at Newport.

Ten different Highlands players scored. Freshman guard Saylor Macke led the way with 17 points with senior point guard Alyssa Harris and freshman guard Kaylee Mills scoring 11 points each. Harris added seven steals and five assists.

Highlands fired away from deep in the contest, attempting 38 3-pointers and hitting 13 of them to go with 18 assists, 32 steals and 30 rebounds.

Highlands plays Walton-Verona (1-1) at 1:15 p.m. back at Newport’s main gym Saturday.
