LINK nky is once again excited to partner with OrthoCincy Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine and announce the highly popular Team of the Week and Team of the Season awards are back for 2025-26 sports seasons!

The LINK nky Team of the Week for Jan. 6-Jan. 12 presented by Ortho Cincy is the Newport Central Catholic boys basketball team

Another tight race and NewCath came ahead of the Scott girls basketball team and the Covington Catholic swim and dive team. We need more voters! Come on people, get the word out and support your favorite teams!

A bonus for the Newport Central Catholic boys basketball team is that they are now eligible for Team of the Season (TOS) for the winter sports season. Bellevue’s football team won Team of the Season for the fall, Simon Kenton’s archery team, Ludlow’s girls basketball team, Conner’s boys basketball team, Dixie Heights boys basketball team, Scott’s swim and dive team and now NewCath boys basketball are the first six team of the week winners for the winter sports season that will run up through February. A vote will follow for TOS when the winter sports season is wrapped up to determine the winner. Then we’ll turn to spring sports in the middle of March. Each TOS winner will receive a $500 scholarship that will go to an athlete of their choice and they will then be considered for Team of the Year (TOY). Voting will take place for TOY once the spring sports TOS is determined.

For the team that is awarded TOY, online and print articles will again be published, a large commemorative plaque will be presented and the school will receive an additional $500 scholarship to be presented to the athlete of their choice at the end of the school year. The call for nominations, voting and winning announcement for each will follow the same format as the TOTW.

The Thoroughbreds picked up a pair of victories Jan. 6-12 over Bellevue and St. Henry to improve to 6-8.

The two wins snapped a six-game losing streak as they look to get back on the right path here at the second half of the season.

In the 36th District victory over Bellevue, NewCath was paced by John Luhn’s 13 points as four players hit double figures and 11 entered the scoring column. Gabe Waggoner put up 11 points while Jack Gearding and Landon Kraft added 10.

In the win over St. Henry, Louie Collopy put up 28 points, Ian Mann with 17 and Gearding with 15. Collopy hit 11-of-18 shots and Mann hit all eight of his free throw attempts.

The ‘Breds added another victory on Jan. 13 in the opening round of the 9th Region All “A” Classic tournament and then defeated Heritage Academy in the quarterfinals on Jan. 15 before losing to eventual champion Beechwood in the semifinals. The ‘Breds are currently 8-9 on the year.
