HOLY CROSS FOOTBALL

The Indians won their fourth game of the season on Friday, edging out Morgan County for a 14-8 victory. The fourth win doubles up last year’s win total and another victory would be their most since 2016 when they went 10-4 and made it all the way to the Class 2A semifinals.
Holy Cross can point to their defense for the victory, allowing just 171 total yards and forcing three turnovers with six tackles for loss. Defensive standouts were Donovan Ambrocio with a team-high nine tackles and an interception with three tackles for loss, Davonte Ryan with five tackles, an interception and forced fumble, Zach Chalfin with seven tackles, two of them for loss and Braylon Thornsberry with a fumble recovery.
The Indians tallied 246 yards on offense, Ulysses Porter leading the ground game with 59 yards on six carries while Trevin Figgs had a rushing touchdown. Ryan had the other touchdown on a two-yard pass from Ambrocio, who connected on 7-of-10 passes for 82 yards.
Holy Cross led 14-0 at halftime. Morgan County did not score its touchdown until the fourth quarter.
Holy Cross opens up district play at Bishop Brossart on Friday and in a district where a standout team hasn’t come forward yet, the Class 1A, 4th District race with the Indians, Mustangs, Ludlow and Trimble County should be an interesting one.
COOPER GIRLS SOCCER

Cooper capped off a 3-0 week with a season extending win over Ryle in the 33rd District tournament semifinals. The Jaguars defeated Villa Madonna (10-0), St. Henry (2-1) and Ryle (2-1).
Standouts on the week were Maleah Alexander with three goals and an assist, Alexa Shupe with two goals, Kamdyn Hamilton with two goals, Emily Green with three assists and Kathrynne Day with two goals and an assist. Allie Ames made eight saves with a combined shutout with Lea Race.
Cooper will play for the 33rd District championship on Tuesday evening against Conner.
CAMPBELL COUNTY VOLLEYBALL

After a 5-7 start to the season, Campbell County is 7-4 in their last 11 games including a 2-0 week last week with victories over Highlands and Scott.
It took all five sets to beat the Bluebirds, 3-2 (25-21, 18-25, 25-20, 21-25, 15-9). The Camels were led by Lexi Scharold with 18 kills and seven blocks, Emma Manser with 15 kills, Ava Crowl with 17 assists, Ella Thorwarth with 21 digs and three aces.
