One streak continued Sunday, and another ended.
The University of Cincinnati women’s soccer team was responsible for both. The Bearcats defeated Northern KentuckyUniversity, 2-1, in the Riverboat Rivalry match at Scudamore Field at NKU Soccer Stadium, ending the Norse’s 14-game home winning string and extending UC’s record against NKU to 5-0-1.
“I think it’s important for us to remember that, you know, we’re playing a team from a power conference, playing in the Big 12, and we just had some really, really positive takeaways,” NKU head coach Bob Sheehan said. “I thought we moved the ball really, really well. I think our combinations were really well done throughout the game.”
UC’s (2-2-2) Bryana Gaynor’s goal opened the scoring in the 23rd minute on a shot to the lower left corner.
NKU (4-2) Macey Blanton converted Sophia Kapszukiewicz’s throw-in in the 67th minute, but the Bearcats’ Tiana Campbell scored the game-winner in the 73rd on a shot by Lexi O’Shea that hit the crossbar.
NKU hosts Eastern Kentucky at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Newman named Horizon League Offensive POW
NKU senior Natalie Newman was named Horizon League Women’s Soccer Player of the Week for two goals in the Norse’s 2-0 win over Bellarmine last Thursday.
Newman has four goals for the season, one more than last year’s three.
“I feel like I’m just more confident in myself this year and just wanting to take shots,” Newman said. “Not more risky, but just more willing to believe in myself. And, we definitely have a much stronger offensive attack this year.”
Thomas More women’s volleyball wins four straight
The Saints rebounded from an 0-3 start at the Thomas More Tournament with 3-0 wins over Central State (25-20, 25-22, 25-13), Salem (25-23, 25-17, 25-21), Lake Superior State (25-18, 25-21, 25-15) and Kentucky State (25-20, 25-11, 25-10).
For the weekend, Reagan Martin had 51 kills. Paige Stockhoff had 20 assists against Salem, 14 against Lake Superior State and 14 against Kentucky State.
Thomas More continues its eight-game home stand against Shawnee State at 7 p.m. Wednesday and Kentucky Wesleyan at 6 p.m. Friday.
Saints women’s soccer remains unbeaten
Thomas More improved to 2-0-2 with Wednesday’s 4-0 win over Shawnee State and Saturday’s 3-2 victory over Trevecca Nazarene.
Ivy Hoffman’s goal with just over two minutes against Trevecca allowed the Saints to remain unbeaten.
The Saints take on Malone University at 4 p.m. Thursday in Canton, Ohio and host Lake Erie College at 2 p.m. Saturday.
TMU men’s soccer snaps two-game losing streak
A Cooper Walters goal in the 68th minute was enough for the Saints to escape with a 1-0 win over Wisconsin-Parkside.
The Saints open their Great Midwest Athletic Conference schedule at 7 p.m. Thursday at Malone and return to Republic Bank Field to face Lake Erie College at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
NKU, Thomas More runners place in top 20 at Mike Baumer Cross Country Classic
NKU senior Grace Biddle won Friday’s women’s 5K in Fairborn, Ohio in 17 minutes, 57.31 seconds. Thomas More sophomore Campbell Gerling was 14th in 18:54.58, and NKU freshman Sami Govey was 17th in 19:02.90.
Other top 50 NKU finishers were: junior Carlie Condit (23rd, 19:14.91), junior Julia Verhoff, (28th, 19:29.00), junior Brittany Arnold (29th, 19:29.10), and junior Emily Foley, (36th 19:39.52). Thomas More freshman Sophie Crider was 47th in 20:06.32.
In the men’s 5K, NKU freshman Noah Towne was 30th in 16:20.47. Other local top 50 finishers were: NKU junior Nathan Ruth (32nd, 16:21.82), Thomas More freshman Mark Antrobus (34th, 16:24.53), NKU senior Brady Messer (36th, 16:35.38), and NKU sophomore Gregory Beard, 50th, 16:50.02).
NKU’s women finished ninth of 14 teams, and the men were seventh of nine. Thomas More’s women were ninth of 15, and the men were eighth of nine.
NKU women’s basketball non-conference schedule released
The Norse open the season Nov. 2 at home against Defiance College. Other home games include Kent State (Nov. 7), Chattanooga (Nov. 12), Southern Indiana (Nov. 25), and Marshall (Dec. 17).
Road games include 2026 NCAA qualifiers Kentucky (Nov. 5) and Baylor (Nov. 22), Eastern Kentucky (Nov. 17), Murray State (Nov. 28), Indiana (Dec. 8), and Morehead State (Dec. 13). The Murray State game will be the first time the Norse and Racers have met since the 2017-18 season.
NKU men’s golf takes second
The Norse finished second in last Monday’s Chaney-Denham-Landrum Shootout 36-hole tri-match against Bellarmine and Morehead State at Belterra Golf Course in Florence, Indiana. NKU’s 7-over-par was six strokes behind first-place Bellarmine and one shot ahead of Morehead State.
NKU’s Michael Long and Ben Carter, tied for sixth individually at even-par 142. Carter’s 2-over par 73 in the first round included a two birdies and an eagle, and Long fired a 2-under opening-round 69.
Grant Broughton and Isaac Moody, competing as independents, tied for 10th at 144, Paxton McKelvey was 14th at 145, Mitch Bertram was 16th with a 148, Caleb Eaglin was 23rd at 149, and Brady Holmes was 25th at 152.
Next up: the Joe Feaganes Invitational Sunday through Sept. 15 at Guyan Country Club in Huntington, West Virginia.
Thomas More football travels to Dayton
The Saints look to rebound from a 27-10 loss Aug. 29 at noon Saturday at Dayton’s Welcome Stadium.
Thomas More head coach Chris Norwell said turnovers keeping the defense on the field was a major factor in the loss.
The Flyers are 2-0 against Thomas More, including last year’s 38-0 shutout.
Thomas More quarterback Ben Chesser threw for 196 yards against Wheeling.
“We were on the field for 32 plays in the third quarter, and that was the result of turnovers on special teams,” Norwell said. “Playing 32 plays in one quarter, that’s almost half a game.”
Thomas More women’s golf opens 2026 season
The Saints travel to Indianapolis for the UIndy Invitational on Tuesday at Champions Point Golf Club in Henryville, Indiana and then compete in the Champions of Women’s Golf event on Saturday at the Champions Golf Course in Columbus, Ohio.
