IT WAS A DAY OF FIRSTS AT THE THIRD ANNUAL MIKE DYAS CLASSIC
UNION, Ky. — A hole-in-one and a first-time foursome win highlighted the third annual Mike Dyas Golf Classic at Triple Crown Country Club in Union, Ky., Monday (July 20th).
Thirty foursomes – a total of 120 golfers – participated in the annual fundraiser for The Point/Arc of Covington. The 54-year-old non-profit organization with a mission to serve everyone – and anyone – regardless of their intellectual and developmental (I/DD) disability – the ability to achieve their highest potential educationally, socially, residentially, and vocationally.
Brian Heck had a hole-in-one on the second hole – a 163-yard par-three. “I used a six iron,” the Lakeside Park resident said. “It was my first ever hole-in-one,” — and it was his 25th appearance in a golf tournament hosted by The Point/Arc. It was the first-ever hole-in-one at a Point/Arc golf classic, which is now in year 33 at Triple Crown Country Club.
“I play golf about thirty times-a-year,” the excited Heck, who is employed with Richard Goettle Inc., said. “As for participating with The Point/Arc, I have known the Gerding Family forever.”
Heck also won Closest to the Pin trophy – and two-year lease from Mercedes Benz of Ft. Mitchell, Ky.
Judi Gerding, who turns 86 on August 6th, is the Founder and current President of the organization.
The foursome of Sam Barnett, Alex Vaughn, Bret Reedy, and Mark Miller shot a 14 under for the title – their first at a Dyas/Point Classic.
Jordan Griffin, Mike Kessling, Matt Brady, and Steve Lock shot a 15 under for the title of last year’s Mike Dyas Classic.
Mike Dyas served as President and Chief Executive Officer for Sterling Cut Glass from 1976-2021. “He was a longtime supporter and former Board Member for us at the Point/Arc,” said Judi Gerding. “And we decided to rename our Golf Classic, The Mike Dyas Classic three years ago.”
Dyas passed at the age of 76 (October 6, 2023).
“His favorite things included trophies, golf, and The Point/Arc,” Gerding recalled.
Andy VonLehman, Chairman of the Dyas Classic, was presented a 30-year plaque by Gerding for his service to The Point/Arc. “We won’t have to paint the wall at The Point with this plaque on it,” she joked.
The Point/Arc was founded in 1972.
