FRANKFORT, Ky. (July 31, 2025) – Dependable Power First Kentucky commends this week’s announcement that two critical coal plants in Kentucky – the Mill Creek and Ghent generating stations – will continue operating beyond their previously scheduled retirements in 2027.

The agreement, which also authorizes the construction of new natural gas combined cycle combustion turbine (NGCC) facilities, ensures ongoing access to coal-based power that is essential to Kentucky’s economic stability and growth.

Dependable Power First Kentucky issued the following statement in response:

“Dependable Power First Kentucky applauds LG&E, KU, and all other stakeholders involved in this agreement for prioritizing the reliability and affordability of Kentucky’s electricity supply. Keeping these generating stations operational strengthens local economies, protects consumers, saves jobs, and helps position Kentucky for future growth.”

“Kentucky’s retail electricity rates, which are 22 percent lower than the national average thanks in large part to coal-based power, have been instrumental in attracting industries, supporting small businesses, and maintaining our economic competitiveness. Extending the life of these power plants will help keep future rates in control, even as overall demand for electricity continues to grow exponentially. This is particularly important as Kentucky attracts new energy-intensive projects and investment, including the future Paducah AI data center recently announced by the U.S. Department of Energy.”

“This settlement is an important step towards reversing the dangerous and premature retirement of critical baseload power plants across the Commonwealth. Dependable Power First Kentucky will continue to advocate for, endorse, and support policies and agreements that promote a healthy power grid and a strong Kentucky.”
