Inside LINK is a weekly column from our CEO, Lacy Starling. If you have questions you’d like Lacy to answer, email her at lacy@linknky.com.
If the past year has taught me anything, it is that Northern Kentucky is a community rich with unique voices. I’ve spent the last 12 months immersed in learning about the 406,000 people who make up our metro, and I have to say – we’re a varied bunch.
And not only varied – we’re talented! I’m astonished at how many people in NKY tell me, when I introduce myself and say what I do for a living, that they too started in journalism, or used to be on TV or the radio.
It seems that there are many folks here who love telling the stories of Northern Kentucky, and it is our job to find them, and amplify their voices when we can.
To that end, LINK is opening a search for new voices – and faces – to help round out our multi-media team. We, of course, already have the imitable Michael Monks, but he’s only one person and asking him to do EVERY piece of audio and video content we want seems a bit greedy. He has to sleep sometime.
What we’re looking for are folks who have talent and experience behind the microphone or in front of the camera. We want to find people who can bring our ideas to life, and might even bring ideas of their own to the table.
We are looking for podcasters, radio announcers, TV news folks who have taken a step back or are looking for something different, TikTok stars (or stars in the making – we can’t pay influencer rates), and people who know how to edit, produce, and disseminate the content they produce.
There are some conditions, of course:
- We aren’t looking to fill a full-time position, so this would be part-time, side-hustle, or retirement work. That’s not to say that it couldn’t become full time at some point, but that’s not the job right now.
- Our guiding principles state that we don’t publish our own opinions, so if you’ve built a following on the dark web starting political firestorms or calling for the United States to give up our democratic experiment and return to the bosom of King Charles III, we can’t hire you.
- We’re scrappy and small, so if you can’t work without a team of producers, makeup artists, hair stylists and a $50,000 studio, you won’t be happy at LINK. We have part of a podcast studio and a couple of pretty sick ring lights, and that’s about it. (We are open to getting more equipment, as long as it doesn’t exceed our annual equipment budget of $4.50.)
- This may be part-time work, but we are not a part-time news organization. If we bring you on, the deadlines are real, and this isn’t a hobby. We can’t start a new podcast and drop it after six weeks because the person we hired to do it got bored.
I don’t think those conditions are too terrible, especially if you are someone who is looking to build an audience in Northern Kentucky. (We have the biggest one, and it is getting bigger all the time.)
So if you, or someone you love, has the talent, drive, ideas, presence, and desire to put their voice (or face) out in the public sphere, email me. Send me a quick email about why you would be a great addition to our multi-media team, any ideas you have for regular content you think our audience would love, and send me some work samples.
I can’t wait to hear your voice.
