Ramp closures into Covington off I-71/75 began in earnest this week as the construction for the Brent Spence Corridor Project commenced.
In spite of this, Mayor Ron Washington said, “it is important to reiterate that Covington remains accessible.”
“I want to acknowledge the concerns and frustrations we have heard from residents regarding the recent ramp closures associated with the Brent Spence Bridge Corridor Project,” Washington also said. “The City of Covington is taking the feedback we received seriously.”
So, if you want to get to Covington, what are your options?
The primary closure that began this week is off I-71/75 onto 12th Street; the detours are shown below. Yet, there are still other ways to get into the city.

Besides the detours, there are still multiple bridges into the city, including the Brent Spence itself, namely via the 5th Street off-ramp, which remains open. If you’re coming from Ohio, people can still enter the city using the Clay Wade Bailey Bridge and the Roebling Bridge, although, admittedly, those bridges are incapable of handling the kind of traffic the Brent Spence can handle.
There are other ways into the city, as well. If you’re coming from Newport, you can enter through the Girl Scout Bridge on 12th Street, although it’s important to be mindful of that bridge’s new traffic configuration.

It’s also possible to enter the city by traveling northward on Pike Street from Park Hills. Finally, you enter the city traveling northward from Fort Wright and Independence on KY-17, itself accessible from I-275, or from Latonia on KY-16.
