The Kenton Sheriff’s Department reaffirmed a warning this week, first made at the end of May, about phone scammers masquerading as law enforcement.
“Law Enforcement agencies will not call, text or message you that there is a warrant for your arrest or that there is any type of civil service needing your attention,” the department said in a press release. “Law Enforcement WILL NOT offer you the ability to PAY a fine or warrant fee over the phone. Your first clue it is a SCAM- a REQUEST FOR PAYMENT!”
Phone scammers will often claim to be law enforcement or court agents and then solicit people for their information or for payment. They often claim that someone must immediately contact the sheriff’s office or risk arrest and then provide a fraudulent number.
If you believe you’ve been contacted by a scammer, the sheriff recommends reporting them to the Kentucky Attorney General at (888)432-9257.
