An independent candidate has filed to run for judge/executive in Boone County.
Timothy Dean Johnson, a libertarian-leaning independent, filed to run for judge/executive on May 29, according to the Kentucky Secretary of State’s website.
Kentucky state law requires that a candidate seeking general election ballot access for county-level positions, such as judge/executive, submit a nomination petition with at least 100 valid signatures.
In Kentucky, the judge/executive serves as the elected chief executive of a county government, overseeing daily operations, preparing the budget, managing personnel, and presiding over the fiscal court, the county’s primary legislative body.
Johnson’s previous electoral experience included an unsuccessful 2024 run as an independent to unseat Kentucky House District 78 Republican Rep. Mark Hart, as well as a challenge to Boone County Judge/Executive Gary Moore in a 2022 Republican primary.
Johnson’s decision comes a little over two weeks after Commissioner Chet Hand defeated longtime incumbent Moore in the Republican primary on May 19. Johnson will face off against Hand in the general election on Tuesday, Nov. 3. There is no Democratic candidate in the race.
