A 13-year-old has died more than a week after a shooting in the Eastside neighborhood of Covington, the Covington Police Department said.

Police said the 13-year-old, who they have not identified, died Sunday after the shooting on Friday, April 24.

Around 11:30 p.m. Friday, officers responded to an apartment in the 100 block of East 11th Street for reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located a 13-year-old boy with a gunshot wound. Court documents say the boy was shot in the head.

Ryan Cupp, 18, turned himself in April 26 and is now being held at the Kenton County Detention Center.

Court documents in Cupp’s case say detectives interviewed multiple witnesses who were at the home when the shooting happened. Those witnesses told police the teen and Cupp were “playing around” with guns in the kitchen, court documents say.

Then, one witness told police they saw Cupp point a black gun with gold accents at the teen and pull the trigger, firing a round at the teen’s head, according to court documents.

The court documents go on to say witnesses told police Cupp threw both guns at a person in the home and told them to get rid of them; detectives found two guns in the back yard of the home, including a Sig Sauer P365 with gold accents.

Kenton County Schools confirmed Cupp is a student at Simon Kenton High School on Monday.

Cupp was originally charged with first-degree assault for the shooting, but police said the charge will be upgraded to wanton murder. He is expected to be in court on Wednesday, May 6.
