Bellevue City Council heard a first reading of a zoning text amendment to allow medical cannabis facilities in the city’s industrial and shopping center zones on Wednesday. These include Bellevue’s industrial park and along Donnermeyer Drive.

Members acknowledged Bellevue has not been selected in the first round of licenses for dispensaries in Northern Kentucky. Member Shauna Kruse said it was important to clear the way for potential future facilities with a goal to ensure the businesses, should they come to the city, will be located where they can be successful.

The council also approved releasing and allocating American Rescue Plan Act funds. Council was given a list of projects that fit into the law’s requirement for funds to be applied only to government services.

“This was a godsend for Bellevue because it’s $1.4 million plus, and we were able to take a lot of streets, do a lot of infrastructure, curbs, do two new playgrounds, two buildings, police cruisers — things that we normally would not have the money to do,” City Administrator Frank Warnock said. “We’ve tried to be strategic about it to make sure that we spend money on infrastructure and capital projects and a bunch of streets.”
