Prep work for a road reconfiguration in Covington that will narrow vehicle lanes and install a bike lane on West Fourth Street from Garrard Street to Johnson Street will begin next week, according to an announcement from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.
Starting Monday, crews will work from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. On Wednesday, they will shift to evening/overnight operations and work between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m.
This lane reallocation will reduce the number of vehicular travel lanes from three to two, according to the cabinet.
The project will also reduce the vehicular lanes through the corridor from 12 to 11 feet wide, and the current right lane on West Fourth Street through this area will become a dedicated bicycle lane.
The new bicycle lane will be 5 feet wide, with a 3-foot buffer from the curb and a 2-foot buffer from vehicular traffic. It will be one-way, with bicyclists traveling westbound on W. Fourth Street.
Weather permitting, the project is expected to be completed by Nov. 15. Signs will be posted to redirect traffic during the work.
