The Campbell County Board of Education has approved school improvement projects at Campbell County High School, Reiley Elementary School and Campbell Ridge Elementary School.
The projects include new auditorium lighting at the high school, a new roof at Reiley Elementary, and pavement improvements at Campbell Ridge Elementary.
“Replacement of the original auditorium lighting is an investment in our award-winning fine arts programs where our students’ talents continue to evolve and flourish,” Campbell County Superintendent Shelli Wilson said. “The Reiley reroof project and Campbell Ridge paving improvements will positively impact efficiency and utility of student spaces.”
Campbell County High School auditorium
The district will replace the original auditorium lighting, which is approaching 30 years old at the high school. The scope of work will include power controls, distribution devices, equipment, demolition, electric, control devices, training, system start-up, labor, and warranties.
The project was initially estimated at $275,000 before a request for proposal but has changed to $525,000 after bids were received. Campbell County Board of Education Chair Kimber Fender said at the meeting that the project came in “staggeringly higher than expected.”
Because of the increase, part of Wilson’s recommendation was to take out $30,000 from the fine arts allocation contribution; however, board member Joshua Perkins wanted to discuss further before deciding how to use the fine arts money.
The money was part of technology and arts enhancements for the district that the board approved in May. The board allocated $30,000 for the 2023-2024 school year toward enhancing the fine arts program. The amount was said to be set aside for Associate Superintendent Adam Ritter to work with fine arts directors to decide the best use of the money.
“My recollection when we voted on that is that was for individual programs to replenish instruments or music or repairs or that sort of thing,” Perkins said. “While obviously we do need to work on the auditorium, I don’t think that’s the purpose that we had allocated that money.”
“I made the recommendation thinking it was in alignment with that intent to support all of the fine arts programs, so if you would like to change that, that’s what we do here,” Wilson said.
Kailyn Campbell agreed with Wilson’s recommendation and said she thought it was “smarter” to use the funds to help everyone.
The board approved the recommendation with plans to discuss the allocation of the $30,000 at its working meeting on Oct. 30.
Aside from the lighting, the board said the sound system, projector, and presentation screen all need replacing in the auditorium.
Reiley Elementary reroof project
This project is part of the Campbell County Schools roof replacement schedule.
The current EPDM roofing (a synthetic rubber roofing membrane) will be replaced down to the decking with an installation of a new EPDM system over new polyiso tapered insulation. It also includes edge metals and accessories to complete the project.
The reroofing project has an estimated cost of $758,782.
Campbell Ridge Elementary paving improvements
In 2018, the district created a 10-year paving plan for the district. Over the summer, they re-evaluated the plan to ensure the paving needs for the district remained current. Upon re-evaluation, it was determined that the paving needs of Campbell Ridge Elementary should be adjusted from 2026 to 2024.
The work will include:
- A 1 1/2 inch overlay.
- Full-depth repairs.
- A 21/2 inch scratch coat at all overlay areas.
- A seal coat of the walking path.
The project is estimated to cost $275,682, paid from the building fund.
“The Campbell County School District is committed to fulfilling the vision defined by the district’s focus pillars,” Wilson said. “One of those focus pillars states that world-class, innovative pathways and spaces will be enhanced for all students to explore passions and talents, with attention to efficiency and fiscal responsibility.”
