Before cars go zooming across the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this weekend, another race is making its way to the starting line.

Race Back to FAC (Florence Aquatic Center) is a 5K race set for Saturday morning to celebrate the opening of the community pool.

The Florence Aquatic Center has been closed for the last two years due to the pandemic. While some outdoor attractions reopened in summer 2021, the city kept the pool filled and maintained but did not reopen it.

There were threats of the aquatic center closing for good, but some Florence residents pushed back, vocalizing their desire to keep the community pool and its programs. Now, they are celebrating its grand re-opening this weekend with a 5K race.

Proceeds of the Race Back to FAC 5K will go to the aquatic center’s NKYSwims program. Brian Kinross, who helped organize the event, said the program pays for swim lessons and other costs for economically disadvantaged children.

Advance signup and race day signup are available. Registration is $25 and t-shirts cost $5. The event starts at 8:30 a.m., Saturday, May 28.
