Ebert's Meats (via Facebook)

It has been on Monmouth Street for a century and a quarter and now Ebert’s Meats will continue that legacy – at least for now.

The 125-year old Newport landmark had announced last week that it was being forced to close its doors after the building’s owner would not renew the butcher shop’s lease.

But something changed in recent days.

“There is still life in Ebert’s Meats,” the business posted to Facebook. “After seeing the love and affection that this community has shown us an agreement has been reached, that this business should and must survive. We had a very constructive meeting with the building owner, where we all agreed this legacy of his family and of Newport will continue. He has consented to letting us remain here while we find suitable location.

“So for the near future we’ll be right here. We will continue to work hard finding our new home. Until then please continue your incredible support it has made all the difference. Thanks to Steve for recognizing the right thing for everyone and thanks to all the friends of Ebert’s it has been very humbling experience for the entire staff. We are more determined than ever to continue for another 125 years.”

The building’s ownership is part of a family that previously operated Ebert’s Meats.

Last Monday, Ebert’s took to Facebook to explain that it was given just two months to close and move out.
