It opened in 1897 and on June 4, Ebert’s Meats will close its doors on Monmouth Street in Newport.
The business claims to be the city’s oldest in operation and said in a post on Facebook that the building’s owner has given them two months to move out.
“The stories about this place are boundless but that’s all coming to an abrupt and unceremonious end,” the Facebook post said.
Greg Steffen, proprietor of Ebert’s Meats, said the store was served a lease termination letter on behalf of Steven and Shirley Rayburn from Fessler, Schneider & Grimme Attorneys at Law.
“This letter shall serve formal notice to you that my clients are electing to terminate the Lease Agreement as of it’s termination date of June 17, 2022. There will be no renewal of this lease and, pursuant to this notice, you are to vacate the subject property located at 939 Monmouth Street, Newport, Kentucky 41071 no later than June 17, 2022,” the letter said.
“Well, right now the city is really trying to help us. This all just got really going. So we don’t know we will. So if we get the right situation, we will we will move but you know, I got I got young people here that can’t wait to find out,” Steffen said.
