Ludlow is seeking to fill an vacant city council seat that opened up following the recent installation of Sarah Thompson as the city’s new mayor.

When a council seat opens up in the middle of a term, the remaining city council members must appoint someone to fill the seat within 30 days of the vacancy. Otherwise, the power to appoint falls to the governor.

City councils in the commonwealth have latitude in how they go about making the appointment, and in this case, the council is soliciting open letters from interested residents.

In order to be eligble, an applicant must live in Ludlow, be at least 18 years old and be a qualified voter within the city, according to Kentucky law.

Interested residents should send a letter of interest and reasons for seeking the appointment to City Clerk Laurie Sparks. You can send the materials via email to lsparks@ludlow.org or through regular mail to P.O. Box 16188, Ludlow, KY 41016. Materials can also be hand delivered to the Ludlow City Building on Elm Street. All materials must be received by Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2025, at 4 p.m.

The council will make the appointment at a special meeting on Thursday, Sept. 25.
