The Covington Public Works Department asked the City Commission this week for an extension of the completion timeline for a street project.

The Madison Avenue and 7th Street Streetscape projects aim to beautify three blocks of both roads by resurfacing much of the area and moving utility infrastructure underground. The department requested an extension of 180 days for the projects.

The extension will not cost the city additional money – the projects are funded with federal dollars – and the delays, according to Public Works Director Keith Bales, are attributable to delays in moving telecommunications equipment off of the above-ground poles into the underground network.

Altafiber has already completed its work, and now the city is waiting for Spectrum to complete its portion.

Once the communications work is complete, the above-ground utility poles will be removed. The Commission placed extensions for both streets on its consent agenda for next week, meaning they will likely pass.
