A 28-year-old woman is in custody after she allegedly shot and killed a man in Florence on Friday, the Florence Police Department said.

Police said officers responded to the 100 block of Lloyd Avenue for reports of a man with a gunshot wound to the chest.

When officers arrived, they found 29-year-old John Lawyer lying in the hallway of a residence, police said. Lawyer was transported to St. Elizabeth-Florence Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Police found that Lawyer and Anastazia M. Calhoun were involved in a verbal argument related to custody issues. That argument escalated, and Calhoun shot Lawyer with a handgun, police said.

Calhoun was detained at the scene. She has been charged with murder and is currently being held at the Boone County Jail.
