Walton City Council will be accepting letters of interest for interim mayor following Mayor Gabe Brown’s resignation earlier this week.
Council accepted Brown’s resignation letter at a special meeting Thursday evening. Brown dropped off his letter of resignation on Tuesday evening while the Council was in the executive session. It went into effect immediately, as there was no “effective by” date listed on it.
According to Councilman Dan Martin, the city will be accepting letters of interest for the position until 4 p.m. on Tuesday, May 14. Those who apply for the position must have been a resident of Walton for at least one year.
After the deadline, council will read the letters and invite the top candidates for in-person interviews on Wednesday. Following the interviews, Council will take a vote on who the best candidate is. Whichever candidate receives the majority vote will take office immediately.
“I think everyone in the city building feels a weight lifted,” Martin said.
Council will still have its regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, May 14, at 7 p.m., in which they’re expected to reveal the results of an investigation into Brown’s conduct as mayor and issue charges against him, presumably involving “misconduct and/or willful neglect.”
