Trevor Steiner will head over from the boys basketball program at Newport Central Catholic to become the next girls basketball head coach of the Thoroughbreds.

Steiner has spent the last two seasons with the boys program as the varsity and junior varsity assistant and head coach of the freshman.

“It is an absolute honor to be named the next girls basketball coach at NewCath,” Steiner said in a press release. “I really respect the vision and goals that Principal Collopy, AD Schulkens and administration have for this school and its future. I truly appreciate the trust they’ve shown in me with this awesome opportunity.”

Prior to coming to The Hill, Steiner spent one season at Clay City (IN) and four seasons at St. Thomas.

“We are excited for Coach Steiner to lead our girls’ program; he brings with him energy and organization. We are looking forward to seeing the development of the young women in our program,” the press release stated.

Steiner replaces Dan Albrinck after one season with the team in which NewCath went 19-12, but missed the 9th Region tournament for the first time since 2016 after losing to Bellevue in the 36th District semifinals. They have three seniors that will walk the stage this spring, but are set to return their top five scorers, including Caroline Eaglin who poured in 21.9 points per game during the 2023-24 season and has 1,807 points in her high school career. They’re expected to return five of their top eight players that played in at least 25 games last season.

Prior to Albrinck, the program was guided by Ralph Meyer, who led NewCath to a 36th District title in 2022 and a region semifinal appearance, the program’s first win in the 9th Region tournament since 2015. Meyer also led the Thoroughbreds to two 9th Region All “A” Classic titles in 2020 and 2021. They’ve won the regional All “A” title 15 times since 1996 and won an All “A” state title in 2010.

NewCath annually churns out a competitive product, posting a 108-69 record over the last six seasons, two of those seasons with 20-plus wins. Their last losing season came in 2017-18.
