Smoke and haze continues to blanket Northern Kentucky as air quality in the region remains at ‘unhealthy’ levels.

National Weather Service Wilmington, which covers southeastern Ohio and Northern Kentucky, extended their Air Quality Alert until midnight tonight.

The Alert encompasses the Northern Kentucky counties of Boone, Kenton and Campbell, including the cities of Florence, Burlington, Oakbrook, Independence, Erlanger, Newport, Covington and Alexandria.

According to airnow.com, the Air Quality Index sits at 165 in Covington and is currently rated as ‘unhealthy.’

Officials suggest that individuals with heart or lung disease, older adults, children and teens should take precautions including:

  • Avoid strenuous outdoor activities.
  • Keep outdoor activities short.
  • Consider moving physical activities indoors or rescheduling them.

Current air conditions are due to wildfires burning across Canada. Smoke from the fires has drifted southward, covering major American cities across the Midwest, such as Detroit, Indianapolis, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland and Columbus.
