Four sections of Graves Road remained in Boone County, leaving residents, travelers and even emergency services confused after the completion of New Graves Road.

Tuesday, at the Boone County Fiscal Court, the court addressed this issue and discussed a resolution to rename the roads to avoid further confusion and similarity.

One long-time Graves Road resident voiced a name suggestion.

“I tried to help this man named Harold with directions,” said Graves Road resident Dave Paddison. “Graves Road, Old Graves, New Graves, it’s too confusing, keep it simple and name it Old Graves Road.”

County Engineer Robert Franxman detailed the planning and zoning changes for the new road names that will go into effect March 1 of this year.

“Boone County Planning and Zoning will update mapping and confirm communications with postal services, all utility companies, 911 dispatch, first responders, county clerk and school systems,” Franxman detailed. “The recommended street names are as follows. 1753 to 1854 Graves Road will become Canopy Drive, none of the individual house numbers will change. 2327 to 2475 Graves Road will become Water Tower Drive. 2619 to 2890 Graves Road will become Old Graves Road. 2957 will become Pump Street.”

After Paddison was happy to hear one of his name suggestions was considered, he added a fun fact about just how long he’s been a Graves Road resident and what this street means to him.

“53 years ago I planted white oak trees,” said Paddison. “Not in my fondest dreams did I think those trees would be the genesis of Canopy Drive. I thank my lucky stars I didn’t plant a bunch of pussy willows.”

“The Fiscal Court voted 4-0 to table this motion/issue until the next meeting to clear up some minor issues identified,” Commissioner Chet Hand told LINK nky. “The new road names and numbers are not yet approved.”
