The children of Cold Spring will soon be able to enjoy improvements to playgrounds all around the city.
Ronnie Hitch of public works discussed the potential improvements at a recent city council meeting.
“Like all of our parks, they do function and they do work, but like everything we have, it’s got a timeline to it and things are starting to show somewhere,” Hitch said. “At some point, we’ve got to start updating these pieces.”
Hitch said he reached out to several companies to give quotes on how much it would take to improve the different playgrounds at the different parks.
“I’ve reached out to seven different companies and I had three respond and the three gave me different quotes,” he said. “I asked each company to give me three quotes. One was a baseline, like to just replace what is over there and leave the surface the way it is. I also asked for a statement piece, something that would just blow everyone away and then I said give me something middle of the road. That way, we had three different designs from three different companies.”
The first design quoted was an estimate of $118,000. One company out of the three that responded quoted this price for an all-inclusive piece that is ADA compliant, which is replacing everything there with a mirror image but with new equipment and leaving the mulch. This was quoted to be the cheapest option. The second price quoted was an estimate of $778,000, which is for the statement piece. That last price was estimated at $470,000, which is for the middle-of-the-road design. Important to note that these prices were quoted for just one park.
Cold Spring has five playgrounds, according to their parks and recreation department website.
Nothing definite has been concluded yet. The council, along with the public works committee, are working to determine the best solution to upgrading the playgrounds in the parks.
