This week, Northern Kentucky public schools didn’t just give grades, but got them too.
All 90 of Northern Kentucky’s schools have now received their latest state report cards, assessing performance during the 2025-26 school year.
Report cards look back at how schools performed on six main indicators and overall. A formula combines performance on those six indicators into raw numbers. Those numbers are simplified into a 1-5 scale, and finally a color rating. Red indicates the lowest performance rating, followed by orange, yellow, green and blue, indicating the highest performance rating.

A first look shows that most Northern Kentucky schools’ color ratings held steady or dropped last academic year compared to the previous year.
Out of all 90 schools, 43 maintained color ratings, 28 moved down and 19 moved up.
Only 51 of Northern Kentucky’s 90 schools scored the blue or green color ratings during the 2025-26 academic year, compared with 56 schools during the 2024-25 year.
The decline falls in line with a statewide trend, according to a Kentucky Department of Education media release which reported fewer green and blue color ratings at the elementary, middle and high school levels in 2025-26.
The agency said a decrease in blue or green ratings among already high-performing schools is likely due to lower “change” scores that measure improvement over time.
“This reflects less improvement from the previous year; although current performance remained relatively similar, overall ratings were lower,” the media release stated.
