Fort Mitchell City Council passed stronger e-bike requirements, including a “Walk your Wheels” component, at its recent meeting.

During Monday night’s meeting, council heard its second reading on further managing e-bikes and e-scooters within city limits. The new “Walk your Wheels” element will now require riders to walk their e-bikes and e-scooters on city sidewalks during school hours along Beechwood Rd.

Mayor Greg Pohlgeers said he intends to expand the rules to other areas of the city to ensure pedestrian safety along high-traffic roadways.

These new regulations come after council began discussing and passing original ordinances earlier this year, including mandatory helmets, lights, noisemakers, and speed limits capped at 15 miles per hour on sidewalks.

In a Facebook post detailing the city’s ongoing changes to e-bike and e-scooter regulations, Pohlgeers highlights the importance of child safety when using these electric vehicles.

“Parents, I’m asking for your help, please have these conversations at home. Talk to your kids about responsible use, talk to them about yielding to pedestrians, talk to them about obeying the safety laws so that everybody can enjoy this freedom, enjoy the sidewalks, and enjoy the outdoors,” said Pohlgeers.
