The St. Henry Crusaders volleyball team got back on the winning track after two tough home losses last week with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-12, 25-18) win on the road against the Beechwood Tigers.
Head coach Maureen Kaiser pointed out the losses to Assumption and Mercy McAuley showed the Crusaders (4-2) what they needed to work on.
“We took the weekend off. But we did light serving and passing (Monday) after school then went to dinner and headed to the game. Each week, you have different goals,” Kaiser said. “We learned, tried to develop and grow from our mistakes from last week. We played well. We were in sync and passed the ball well.”
Kaiser credited Macy Lentz for passing the ball around in St. Henry’s balanced offense. Alivia Skidmore and Anna Guard came into the game as the team’s two kills leaders.
“We’re all good volleyball players,” Guard said. “But we learned we’re stronger together. From a volleyball standpoint, we learned we need to focus on the first contacts with serves and serve-receiving just to keep us more in system.”
Beechwood (3-2) had 19 kills, four blocks, three assists, 33 digs and three aces. Maggie Dawson led the Tigers with 12 digs and Kendale Lair had seven. Isabel Baaker led Beechwood with six kills.
Beechwood travels to Newport Central Catholic (1-6) on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. St. Henry plays in the Nike Tournament of Champions on Friday down at the Wiregrass Ranch Sports Campus in Wesley Chapel, Florida.

Scott 2, Newport 0 (25-9, 25-4)
The Eagles earned the sound non-region victory on the road.
“Our motto has been, ‘We’re small, but mighty.’ We’re not super big this year,” said Andrea Sullivan, Scott head coach. “We’re kind of a young team. But we have a little bit of experience there. I think we have some girls that are stepping into the roles. I feel like we’re not necessarily missing a beat. But we still need a lot of growth. These girls are hungry to play. But we’re still making some inexperienced mistakes.”
Scott (7-3) had 17 aces, 16 kills, one solo block and 13 assists in the win. Brooklyn Helm served 10 aces and 17 points in the win and Ryann Grigsby had 10 assists and two aces. Brooke Balsley had a team-high four kills and Milyn Minor had three.
“(Coach) Sullivan worked with me in serving different zones deep and then short,” Helm said. “I think we did well as a team overall. We cheered each other on and encouraged one another.”
Newport (2-8) had six kills, six assists and 16 digs in the loss. Rayona Lindsey and DeAyjah White led the Wildcats with four digs each.
Newport plays at Lloyd Memorial (3-4) on Thursday at 7 p.m. Scott plays in its own September Slam starting Friday against Dixie Heights (6-2) and Oldham County (3-1) at 6 and 8 p.m., respectively.

Highlands 3, Bishop Brossart 0
The Bluebirds took down the Mustangs at Tower Park in a non-region county battle.
Highlands (5-2) outshot Bishop Brossart, 9-4. Highlands goalkeeper Natalie Hinegardner had four saves and Brossart goalkeeper Madeline Broering had six.
“To be able to get back out and get back to our tactical game plan was a nice little push for us,” said Chris Norris, Highlands head coach. “Brossart’s defense was very, very stingy. They’re quick in the back. They cover space well. They man mark well. They don’t let you turn. We actually had to change our formation a bit just to see if we could open it up more on the top side.”
Claire Cavacini scored twice in the second half to put the game away and Laney Smith scored the other goal in the first half. Smith and Kate Jamie had one assist each.
“I feel like they had some players in the midfield that were really strong, which made us play out wide more,” Jamie said. “So I feel like having to play quick one-touches, two-touches really changed the game. (The first goal) made us take a deep breath and then relax. But then we knew we had to lock down and finish the game off.”
Highlands travels to Beechwood (5-3-1) on Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. game. Brossart (6-3-1) takes on Paris (1-1) in the 10th Region All “A” Classic at 3 p.m.
Walton-Verona 4, Ryle 0
The Bearcats recorded what head coach Patrick Luken said is the biggest win in program history shutting out the visiting Raiders.
“It was a very wide-open game. It was very competitive,” Luken said. “Ryle probably had more of the ball. They move it pretty well. I feel like our outside backs and our outside midfielders did a phenomenal job communicating and transitioning to pressure. Really, we won because all 11 players did a good job holding shape and make them go through our entire team instead of high-marking one-on-one plays.”
Walton-Verona (7-0-2) outshot Ryle, 11-5. Cam Christy had a hat trick and one assist to lead the way with Emma Landrum scoring the other goal. Kaitlyn Lemming, Macy Sawyer and Trinity Bauwens had one assist each with goalkeeper Brynn Willis recording five saves.
“It was a lot of good passes from my teammates and being able to go to the other end and finish really,” Christy said. “All my goals were assisted and my assist was winning the ball in the air and finding my other forward (Landrum). We did really well with finding the gaps and being able to play the ball accurately.”
Ryle (1-7) has dropped seven in a row.
