Campbell County moved on to the 10th Region softball tournament semifinals while Scott and Simon Kenton lost their quarterfinal matchups in the 10th and Eighth Region, respectively.
Here’s how the three games played out:
Campbell County 3, Bracken County 0
Hope Hamilton dazzled in the circle with a complete game three-hitter and Mallory Fleckenstein’s three-run double in the first inning was enough to get the Camels into Wednesday’s semis.
Hamilton retired 12 of the last 13 batters she faced after getting out of a troublesome fourth inning where Bracken County (21-15) had runners on second and third with one out. Hamilton struck out the next two batters and didn’t allow another Bracken baserunner to reach second base the rest of the way. She struck out six and walked one in the victory.
Samantha Perry led the way at the plate with three hits in Monday’s 10th Region softball tournament quarterfinals at Pendleton County.
Campbell County (18-5) faces Montgomery County at Pendleton County on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the semifinals after Tuesday’s semifinal matchup was postponed. The two teams haven’t met since 2013. Monday’s victory marked the third straight season the Camels have reached the region semifinals.
Mason County 5, Scott 1
In an error-filled game with the two teams combining for eight errors, Mason County was the one who took advantage most in Monday’s 10th Region quarterfinal contest at Pendleton County.
The Lady Royals scored three runs in the first thanks to four walks drawn and that was all Delana Rigg needed in the circle. Rigg allowed just four Scott hits, striking out four and walking two.
Scott got within 3-1 in the fourth on Emerson Morman’s fielder’s choice RBI, but the threat was eliminated from there on a double play.
Scott loaded the bases in the fifth with two outs, but a lineout from Jamie Golden ended the inning. Their season comes to a close at 12-15 and will graduate three seniors as they are still in search of their first ever 10th Region tournament victory.
Mason County (11-18) advances to face Harrison County in Wednesday’s semifinals at Pendleton County at 5 p.m.
Woodford County 1, Simon Kenton 0
Simon Kenton entered the postseason as one of the highest scoring teams in the state, but were shut out in back-to-back games.
After losing to Grant County in the 32nd District championship, they fell victim to another 1-0 loss in Sunday’s 8th Region tournament quarterfinals at Woodford County.
The Lady Pioneers were held to five hits in the season-ending loss, just couldn’t find the holes as they struck out just two times. Lauren McIntosh pitched a complete game, five-hitter in defeat, striking out one and walking one.
The lone run of the game came in the bottom of the fourth on Norah Ashburn’s RBI double. Simon Kenton had runners on first and second in the third, fifth and sixth innings, but were unable to find the timely hit. Their 22-6 record came with an 18-game winning streak as they’ll graduate three seniors.
Woodford County (18-11) advanced to Tuesday’s semifinals where they’ll face Oldham County at the University of Louisville.
