After opening the season as one of Arena Football One’s hottest teams, the Kentucky Barrels suddenly find themselves surrounded by questions heading into the regular-season finale.

Following a 7-2 start, Kentucky has dropped consecutive games and now appears to be in freefall after making sweeping roster changes just days before its final regular-season contest on July 11 at Beaumont.

According to AF1’s online transaction ledger Monday, the Barrels either released or suspended 17 players, by far the league’s largest roster shakeup as teams prepare for the postseason. Eight players were suspended indefinitely by the league, while nine others were released.

The moves came on the heels of Kentucky’s most lopsided loss of the season, a 60-8 defeat to the Minnesota Myth on July 5. The Barrels managed just one touchdown, a 1-yard quarterback sneak by Eric Phoenix, while producing only 86 passing yards and failing to establish any consistent offensive rhythm.

Kentucky’s struggles have been limited to the past two weeks. Before losses to the Washington Wolfpack (47-42) on June 20 and Minnesota, the Barrels had won seven of their first nine games and appeared firmly in contention near the top of the league standings.

Saturday’s lineup already looked dramatically different from earlier in the season. Of the 17 players who were released or suspended Monday, only wide receiver Shiloh Flanagan appeared in the official statistics from the Minnesota game, indicating Kentucky had already begun reshaping its roster before the transactions became official.

Among the players suspended indefinitely were standout wide receiver Darius Prince, defensive linemen Zeke Rose and GeeMontae Peck, offensive lineman Melvin Hollins, defensive backs Joe Powell and Bashu Delco, linebacker Donovan Ollie and kicker Ammon Lakip.

The Barrels also released quarterback Shae Spencer, offensive linemen Jamezz Kimbrough, Ryan Johnson and Noah Buttiglieri, defensive linemen Sidney Houston Jr., Joe Golden and Freddie Booth-Lloyd and wide receivers KaRonce Higgins and Shiloh Flanagan.

The organization did not immediately explain the moves and did not respond to a request for comment by LINK nky.

AF1 rosters are limited to 24 players, with 21 players eligible to dress on game day.

If the season ended today, the Barrels would earn the No. 3 seed in the AF1 playoffs. However, their position remains far from secure.

Minnesota, now 6-4 after defeating Kentucky twice this season, trails the Barrels by just a half-game with two regular-season games remaining and owns the head-to-head tiebreaker.

Arena Football One began the 2026 season with nine franchises before the Oregon Lightning ceased operations in June, leaving eight teams in the league. That move did the Barrels no favors as they were scheduled to host Oregon on June 13. Instead of getting a different home game, the schedule restructure forced more road games for the Barrels, finishing out the regular season with five games on the road and three West Coast trips.

Six teams will qualify for the playoffs, while the Nashville Kats and Albany Firebirds have already secured the top two seeds and first-round byes into the semifinals. The Barrels will get one more guaranteed home game in the first round of the playoffs as they’ve clinched at least the No. 4 seed for the postseason.
