The Lexington Catholic Cup generally sees some of the best competition from around the state including two or more from Boone, Kenton and Campbell counties.
Four from the area will venture down this year to play a guaranteed three games. Two of them could not come home with wins on the first night that took place on Labor Day.
In the first game, the Highlands Bluebirds (4-5-2 overall) dropped a 3-2 battle to Lexington Dunbar (4-4-2), 3-2, losing on kicks from the mark. Junior Laney Smith had one goal and one assist to junior Claire Cavacini to lead Highlands.
Highland had eight shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Bella Moreno had three saves.
Then in the second game, the Simon Kenton Pioneers (7-2-3) fell 1-0 to the host Knights (9-1). LexCath has won nine straight since opening the season with a 3-0 loss to Sacred Heart.
Senior Oliva Bretz scored the game’s lone goal in the second half for LexCath. Senior goalkeeper Olivia York had 16 saves for the Pioneers before going down with an injury. Sophomore Fayth Tomlin finished the game and had six saves.
Highlands and Simon Kenton play back at LexCath on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
