What you need to know

  • Week 1 brought big crowds, excitement, and St. Henry’s first varsity football game.
  • Ryle edged CovCath, Highlands starred with Tayden Lorenzen, and Campbell County scored 3 kickoff return TDs in a 98-point game.
  • Lloyd Memorial and Bellevue impressed with dominant wins, Bellevue forcing 7 turnovers.
  • Standouts: Trey Cook (381 passing yards, 5 TD), Kendall Buck-Barber (181 rushing yards), and Blake Minor (7/7 PAT, 1 FG).

Each week throughout the 2025 KHSAA prep football season, we’re going to recognize the standouts from Friday night.

We’ll also provide 10 takeaways from Friday’s contests.

The key categories offensively are 200-yard passers, 100-yard rushers and 100-yard receivers. On defense, we’ll look at the top tacklers and players who forced turnovers.

We won’t forget about the kickers either, spotlighting the top guys who put the ball through the uprights.

But first, 10 takeaways from Week 1:

— How exciting is Week 1? Everyone is 0-0 and starts off with optimism and excitement from around town. I personally was at Ryle-CovCath and it’s just a pleasant sight to see football back with attendance numbers high and the buzz in the air.

— About the Ryle-CovCath game, I know the Colonels took the loss, but they should come out of that game with a lot of positives. They battled with the 6A runner-up to the finish and the Raiders by no means dominated that one. A couple costly turnovers from the Colonels led to 10 Ryle points and that was basically the difference in the game.

— Even with the passing game not doing much, Ryle’s Jacob Savage and Dameyn Anness are a load to bring down and their running style will wear teams down throughout the year.

— A storybook finish for Highlands and Tayden Lorenzen. He’s going to be featured it looks heavily in the Bluebirds offensive plans as he threw a pass, ran the ball 14 times and caught two passes. Anything near the goal line, you better put a couple hats on No. 22. He’s also playing defense.

— A really cool scene in Erlanger Friday night as St. Henry played their first official varsity football game in school history. Roughly 90 years in the making, the Crusaders pulled out all the stops to make Friday night special.

— Lloyd Memorial looks to be showing no affects of losing a lot of their top skill guys to graduation. They earned their most lopsided win over NewCath this century and have won three of their last five over the Thoroughbreds after losing 19 straight from 2001-2016.

— Campbell County returned three kickoffs for touchdowns against Scott in the season opening win in a game that featured 98 points.

— Newport and Lloyd makes for an interesting game this week, both coming off blowout victories. The Wildcats defeated Ludlow 47-7.

— Bellevue forced seven (!) turnovers in their win over Trimble County.

— Simon Kenton’s breakneck pace is no more. They ran just 45 plays in Friday’s 20-10 victory over Dixie Heights. A team used to seeing games in the 40’s and 50’s in their old regime, they look to be a little more methodical in their approach now. The most important stat? They’re 1-0.
