The Cooper Jaguars girls golf team has a new standard finishing a program-best third in the state tournament that took place Friday and Saturday at the Bowling Green Country Club.
Cooper shot 341 on the par 72 course on Friday then came back to shoot 326 on the second day for a total of 667. Madison Central shot 634 to win the state championship and Marshall County shot 651 to take runner-up honors. The Jaguars placed the fifth the previous two years.
“Friday really wasn’t our best day,” said Joe Deters, Cooper head coach. “We kind of came out slow and a little bit sluggish I thought. The big thing (Saturday) to kind of solidify third place is we actually were neck-and-neck with Marshall County and Madison Central until the last five, six holes. Madison Central kind of pulled away from everybody later on. We actually played really well the first half, which was great to see.”
Sophomore Reagan Ramage shot a two-day total of 150 to tie for fifth overall leading the Jaguars. Marshall County’s Trinity Beth won the individual state honors shooting 143 including a one-under par 71 on the second day. Ramage has been to state four times.
Three juniors Eva Maley, Ava Finke and Kendall Brissey shot 168, 172 and 177 rounding out the scoring for Cooper. Senior Skylar Anderson concluded her career shooting 200. Maley and Brissey golfed at state for the fourth time. Anderson made her third appearance there and Finke golfed at state for the first time in her career.
One challenge Bowling Green has compared to other courses to the north is Bermuda grass. Cooper golfed there earlier in the season.
“With the rough there, you could see balls bounce a couple times then they would bury,” Deters said. “You could be 15 feet away from the ball and you would just lose them when they went down into that Bermuda grass. It’s always tough down there.”
Several others from Boone, Kenton and Campbell County schools participated in the final round of the state tournament. Notre Dame’s Didi Jiradamkerng and Natalie Lovell finished 50th and tied for 72nd out of 88 golfers shooting 176 and 186, respectively. Ryle’s Anika Okuda tied for 59th shooting 180 and Bishop Brossart’s Emma Laker took 67th shooting 182.
