Holmes is turning to one of its own in hopes of continued progress with its girls basketball program.

The Bulldogs have hired former standout player Jaynice Stovall as head coach, bringing back a familiar face to a team searching for its first winning season in nearly a decade.

A 2017 Holmes graduate, Stovall has built coaching experience at multiple levels, including time as an assistant coach with the Bulldogs program.

“Coach Stovall represents everything we want in a leader of our program,” Holmes Athletic Director Ken Ellis said. “Her experience as a Bulldog, her success on the court and her commitment to our student-athletes make her the perfect fit to lead our girls basketball program moving forward.”

During her playing career, Stovall was one of the top guards in Northern Kentucky, helping lead Holmes to three consecutive 9th Region championships as the Bulldogs’ point guard. She finished her high school career with 1,371 points, 404 rebounds, 384 assists, and 420 steals.

Stovall continued her career at Vincennes University, where she led the National Junior College Athletic Association in steals during one season.

Stovall replaces Zuri Hill, who resigned in April.

Stovall inherits a team that won nine games this past season and posted a 9-13 record, a season after opting out of varsity play with so much youth on the roster. This past year’s team had just one senior on the roster mixed in with two juniors, a sophomore, seven freshman and eight middle schoolers. They were led by senior Jayda Hill’s 11.3 points per game while eighth graders Brooklyn Brown and Aubrey Wilson put up 7.7 and 6.7 points per game, respectively. Freshman Lunden Scott posted 6.8 points per game and junior Carlie Riley with 5.2 points per game.
