The Newport boys basketball team built a 34-15 halftime lead on Washington County to open the King of the Bluegrass Tournament at Fairdale High in Louisville and held off a charge in the second half for a 64-55 win.
Newport made the most of its ball pressure forcing 14 Washington County turnovers while committing just nine. The Wildcats outscored the Commanders, 19-10 in points off turnovers.
Newport put three players in double figures. Taylen Kinney led the way scoring 19. DeShaun Jackson scored 17 with Jabari Covington adding 11.
Newport (7-1) returns to Fairdale on Thursday to face undefeated Great Crossing at 7:30 p.m.
Boys Basketball
Pendleton County 72, Bishop Brossart 58
The Mustangs could not keep pace with the Wildcats in the road 10th Region loss.
Parker Mulberry led Brossart with 17 points. Beckett Kuntz and Ben Doyle followed with 11 points each.
Pendleton County senior guard Alex Beyst torched Brossart for 23 points. Austin Kirsch and Hunter Cox followed with 19 and 16 respectively.
Brossart (3-4) hosts Bourbon County on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

The Jaguars advanced to the semifinals of the Queen of the Commonwealth Tournament with their fourth straight win.
Cooper put three players in double figures. Bella Deere led the way scoring 17 with Logan Palmer and Haylee Noel following with 15 and 11, respectively.
Cooper (7-3) takes on host Bullitt East at 7 p.m. Thursday. The winner heads to Friday’s championship.
Girls Basketball
Simon Kenton 61, Madisonville-North Hopkins 34
The Pioneers rebounded from the loss to Bowling Green on Tuesday to record a convincing win in the Queen of the Commonwealth Tournament at Bullitt East.
Brynli Pernell made five three-pointers on her way to 27 points to lead Simon Kenton. Anna Kelch followed with 10 points and Meg Gadzala scored eight.
Simon Kenton (8-2) takes on Owensboro Catholic on Thursday back at Bullitt East.
Boyd County 48, Holy Cross 40
The Indians could not pull off a second straight win in the Queen of the Commonwealth Tournament.
Holy Cross held one-point leads at halftime and after three quarters before senior Jasmine Jordan exploded for 11 of her 17 points in the fourth quarter to lift the Lions to the win.
Julia Hunt led the Indians scoring all 11 of her points in the first half. Alyssa Arlinghaus followed with eight.
Holy Cross takes on Franklin County on Thursday at 7 p.m. back at Bullitt East.
Scott 60, Tates Creek 46

The Eagles hit the road and took down the Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Swishmas Tournament hosts in Lexington.
Scott put three players in double figures. Kourtney Peterson scored 20 points to lead the Eagles. Nakiah Mejia and Noelle Price followed with 15 and 12, respectively.
Scott (6-1) returns to Tates Creek on Thursday to face North Hardin at 8 p.m.
Villa Madonna 57, Newport 42
The Vikings snapped a seven-game losing streak with the road 9th Region win.
Kate Gibbs led Villa Madonna with 20 points making four three-pointers. Addison Nine and Catherine Gifford followed scoring 15 and nine respectively.
Amariana Cook scored 25 to lead Newport, but no one else scored more than seven.
Newport (2-6) travels to Mason County on Friday for a 7:30 p.m. game. Villa Madonna (2-8) takes on Newport Central Catholic in the 9th Region All “A” Tournament at 7:45 p.m.
