The Newport boys basketball team earned another huge win over a highly-rated out of state opponent taking down Huntington Prep (West Virginia) Irish, 58-55 at Griffin Elite.
The Wildcats found themselves down 13 late in the third quarter, but finished with the final five points of the quarter that led to a 16-0 run. Newport outscored Huntington Prep 18-7 in the fourth.
Taylen Kinney and Jabari Covington led the way with 22 and 11 points, respectively. Kinney leads the Wildcats with 18.1 points per game and is one of four Wildcats averaging in double figures.
Newport grabbed 37 rebounds in the win. DJ Jackson and Kinney led the way with 10 and nine, respectively.
Newport (5-1) takes on Washington County on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the King of the Bluegrass Tournament at Fairdale in Louisville.
Boys Basketball
Simon Kenton 69, South Oldham 54

Senior Travis Krohman made five 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 23 points to lift the Pioneers in his first game back from injury to lead the Pioneers to their first win of the season.
Krohman had plenty of help. Jay Bilton scored 17 and Bode Stone added 10.
“We knew that when (Krohman) got back, things would be different,” Simon Kenton head coach Trent Steiner said. “When your best player is out, things don’t run the same. There’s no elixir to it. Everybody tries to do what they can do.”

Covington Catholic 92, Newport Central Catholic 46
CovCath took advantage of 46 NewCath turnovers, scoring 42 points off them on their way to the sound 9th Region win.
The Colonels recorded 18 steals and took 41 more shots than the Thoroughbreds. Cash Harney led CovCath with four steals.
Caden Miller led CovCath with 23 points and eight rebounds. Harney and Athens McGillis followed with 15 and 14 points, respectively, as 14 different Colonels scored.
NewCath did not put any players in double figures. Caleb Eaglin led the way with eight points.
CovCath (6-1) takes on La Lumiere (Indiana) on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at the Griffin Elite Showcase. NewCath (2-5) plays at Ludlow on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
Holy Cross 64, Trinity Christian 45
The Indians won their third straight game at the Stock Yards Bank and Trust Challenge in Morehead.
Luke Arlinghaus led the way with 18 points, hitting 7-of-10 shots from the field. Gavin Goetz added 12 points while William McElheney chipped in seven points to go with 10 rebounds.
Holy Cross (4-1) is back in Morehead on Saturday, facing East Carter at 1:30 p.m.
Heritage Academy 54, Calvary Christian 51 (OT)
The Eagles pulled out the overtime win on the road.
Trent Stone finished with 22 points, Cade Holtman adding 11.
Heritage Academy (3-3) returns to action on Tuesday at home against Whitefield Academy at 7:30 p.m. Calvary Christian (2-5) hosts Campbell County on Monday at 7:30 p.m.

The Thoroughbreds used balanced scoring to pull away in the second half for the 9th Region win.
Caroline Eaglin made 10-of-13 free throws on her way to 24 points to lead the way and freshman Brooklyn Cole scored 13. Jaylee Brannen and Madison Wherry McFarland scored eight each.
“We have a bunch of different defenses that we’ve been trying to get in this year,” Eaglin said. “Just getting up and pressuring this year with a bunch of guards on the floor has been good for us. We all work together.”
Dixie Heights put four players in double figures playing without Catherine Buddenberg, Abby Thelen and Asia Carner. Bella Crawford and Jalynn Brooks scored 18 and 15 respectively, with Avery Moore and Peyton Gibson following with 12 and 11.
NewCath (3-2) travels to Grant County on Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. game. Dixie Heights (4-3) takes on Anderson County in the White, Greer and Maggard Holiday Classic on Wednesday at 8 p.m.
Simon Kenton 58, Walton-Verona 25

The Pioneers continued to roll, dominating the home 32nd District seed game for their sixth straight win.
Rylie Flynn broke out to score 16 points, earning St. Elizabeth Player of the Game honors and Haylie Webb scored 10 as eight different players scored. Megan Gadzala added eight.
Elin Logue scored 16 points to lead Walton-Verona.
Simon Kenton (7-1) takes on Bowling Green in the Queen of the Commonwealth Tournament at Bullitt East on Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. Walton-Verona (2-5) plays at North Oldham on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
Bellevue 62, Dayton 42
The Tigers won their fourth straight game in a 36th District victory over Dayton.
Sydni Massey led three Bellevue players in double figures with 17 points, Jalyah Dowell with 12 and Taytem Sorrell chipping in 11. Paulina Long had eight points to go with 13 rebounds.
Tayah Smith had 14 points and seven rebounds to lead Dayton. Lanaya Torres chipped in 10. Bellevue won the rebounding battle, 37-24.
Bellevue (5-1) will look to make it five in a row when they play at Boone County on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Dayton (3-6) hosts Pendleton County on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
Scott 67, Holmes 27
The Eagles earned the blowout victory on the road.
Nakiah Mejia led the way with 19 points and four steals, she was joined in double figures by Kaia Peterson with 11 points, Kourtney Peterson with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Holmes was led by Anjali Faehr with 12 points. Seven others scored, but no one else scored more than three points.
Scott (4-1) plays at Augusta on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Holmes (2-6) plays at Sayre on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

Marcus Harris got his first career coaching victory as the Wildcats ran away from Western.
Newport (1-4) will look for two in a row on Saturday when they host St. Patrick at 2 p.m.
