A number of players for the University of Oregon Ducks have left the program in recent days including 2020 Ryle graduate Maddie Scherr, who announced her departure Tuesday. The 5-foot-11-inch sophomore guard announced her decision to enter the transfer portal on Twitter on Tuesday morning.
“After much consideration, I’ve come to the conclusion that the best thing for me as a person and as a basketball player is to move on from my time at Oregon,” Scherr said on Twitter. “I want to thank all of the coaches that have helped me over the past two years. I’m so appreciative of each coach and trainer who believed in me and pushed me as best as they could to be better. I want to thank all of the Oregon fans for being so incredibly supportive during my time at Oregon. You all have made me a girl from Kentucky feel like she was at a home away from home. Lastly, thank you to every one of my teammates. All of you have been like dear sisters to me. I am so thankful that we have been able to play together and make memories that will last a lifetime.”
Scherr averaged 4.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.3 assists for Oregon this past season. Oregon finished 20-12 overall and 11-6 in Pac-12 Conference action good for a second-place tie with Washington State behind Stanford’s perfect 16-0 mark. Stanford is playing in the Women’s Final Four this weekend.
Oregon lost 80-73 to Utah in the Pac-12 Tournament semifinals before losing 73-70 to Belmont in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in double overtime. Scherr played 40 minutes in that game recording five rebounds, three assists and three points.
During her freshman year, Scherr averaged 2.3 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game. She ranked second for the Ducks with 25 steals. Oregon finished 15-9 overall and 10-7 in Pac-12 play. Oregon lost 71-64 to Oregon State in the first game of the Pac-12 Tournament. The Ducks drove to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament losing 60-42 to Louisville.
The 2020 Ryle graduate won McDonald’s All-American honors as a high school senior. Scherr won the Kentucky Gatorade Player of the Year honor as a junior and senior and won Kentucky Miss Basketball her senior year.
Scherr helped Ryle to three consecutive 9th Region championships in 2018, 2019 and 2020. Ryle won its first state title in school history her junior year in 2019. Scherr averaged 16.1 points, 7.3 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 3.7 steals per game that year.
Scherr averaged 14.9 points and 7.3 rebounds per game her senior year. Ryle knocked off Letcher County Central, 59-36 in the first round of the state tournament in 2020. But the COVID pandemic forced the cancellation of the rest of the tournament. Scherr graduated as Ryle’s all-time leader in scoring, rebounding and assists.
Scherr is the fifth player to leave Oregon in recent weeks. Four were five-star recruits.
