Thomas More University women’s golfers Natalie Hamilton and Rachel Hummel have demonstrated their prowess both on and off the golf courses during their playing careers with the Saints. As good as they are on the links, they are even better in the classroom.
Hamilton and Hummel were named to the Women’s Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar Team last week. They are no strangers to the honor. Hamilton, a fifth-year senior, was honored for the third time. Hummel, a graduate student, was named a fourth time.
Criteria is at least a 3.5 cumulative grade-point average, inclusion on a college team’s roster through the end of the season and 50 percent of a team’s regularly scheduled competitive rounds played.
Hamilton accrued a 3.87 cumulative GPA as a middle school education major. Hummel, a sports and entertainment marketing major, put together a 3.63 GPA.
Hamilton and Hummel were two of the best on the Saints last season. Hamilton averaged a round score of 84.58 and tied for first at the Eagle Invitational in fall of 2022. Her season-low round was 79. Hummel averaged a round score of 83.08, had three top-20 finishes and shot a season-best round of 77.
Hamilton, from Lakota East High School, and Hummel, from Mercy McAuley, also helped the Thomas More women’s golf program tie a school record with three athletes named 2023 women’s golf NAIA scholar-athletes. Joining Hamilton and Hummel was Kentuckian Maddie Johnson of Raceland High School. It was the third time both Hamilton and Hummel earned the honor. It was a first for Johnson, who carried a 3.85 GPA while earning a business administration MBA.
Criteria for selection include 3.5 GPA or higher, at least one full calendar year at the current institution and a sport eligibility certificate.
Hamilton, Hummel and Johnson were named 2023 women’s golf Academic All Mid-South Conference honorees along with teammate Reagan Toothaker from Franklin County High School. Johnson also was named to the MSC Champions of Character Team for the second time.
