Jake Thelen continues to move up the coaching ranks.

The 2011 Covington Catholic grad has been promoted on the University of Cincinnati’s men’s basketball staff to Director of Player Development in addition to assistant coach duties following two years as the Director of Basketball Operations.

Thelen started his coaching career after graduating from Bellarmine on St. Xavier’s (Louisville) staff in 2015. He then went on to the University of Indiana to be a graduate assistant under Tom Crean. After a season in Bloomington, he returned to his alma mater to coach at Bellarmine as an assistant coach before going on to the University of Georgia to coach for three seasons.

He’ll enter his third season on the Bearcats staff under Wes Miller as they transition to the Big 12 Conference for the upcoming season.

Thelen played under Mike Listerman at Covington Catholic and holds a Colonels record for most field goals made in a single game with 18 against Boyle County in 2011. He scored 1,258 points in his Colonels career from 2008-11, good for eighth in program history.

He then went on to be an All-American at Bellarmine and was named GLVC Player of the Year in 2015. Thelen scored 1,412 points in his college career.

Thelen is joined by another CovCath grad as CJ Frederick transferred into the program from the University of Kentucky. Brian Cheek will also be a manager for the program, having done so with the Colonels the last three years.
