Despite a long delay, Thomas More women’s basketball is headed to the Elite Eight.
The Saints ran away with things on Cumberlands, 91-61 on Tuesday night of the NAIA Women’s Basketball Championship Round of 16, presented by Balogy.
The win gets Thomas More to 29-3 on the year as they’ll face No. 3 seed Montana Western on Wednesday night at 9 p.m. EST. Montana Western upset no. 2 seed Dordt (Iowa) on Tuesday night, Dordt the hometown team in the tournament played in Sioux City.
Emily Simon led the Saints with 23 points and seven rebounds, Alex Smith and Mattison Vickers chipping in 12 points apiece. Zoie Barth also hit double figures with 10 points and brought down six rebounds.
Cumberlands, a Mid-South foe who the Saints had already beat twice, led 18-13 after the first. A 19-3 run gave Thomas More a 41-27 lead at halftime.
Thomas More started to run away with things in the third as they built the lead to 20 and took a 68-48 lead into the fourth.
The Saints shot 49% from the field and knocked down 12 three-pointers while knocking down 15-of-18 from the free throw line. If Thomas More can win on Wednesday, they’ll head to their third straight national semifinal appearance on Friday.
