HOLY CROSS GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM

The Indians made the run in Richmond and were the last team standing Sunday afternoon at Eastern Kentucky University for the All “A” Classic tournament.
The tournament that consists of the 120 smallest schools in Kentucky has a regional All “A” tournament to advance to state. After Holy Cross breezed through the 9th Region, they advanced to Richmond and defeated Leslie County, Owen County, Pikeville and Bethlehem on their way to the trophy.
Julia Hunt was named tournament MVP, posting a stat line of 21 points, 19 rebounds and eight blocked shots in the title game. Nejai Lewis scored her 1,000th career point in the victory over Bethlehem in the title tilt. Lewis was named to the all-tournament team along with seniors Sarah Bottom and Aleah Arlinghaus.
The title was the second in program history for the girls team coached by Ted Arlinghaus. They’re now 21-5 in the season and ranked No. 7 in the state in the latest girls statewide media poll.
DAYTON BOYS BOWLING TEAM

Despite having the No. 7 seed in the 5th Region bowling tournament, Dayton’s boys bowling team made a run all the way to the finals before losing to Pendleton County. The runner-up finish earned them a spot in the state tournament in Louisville, Feb. 6-8.
First they defeated Highlands, 3-2 (201-183, 182-160, 145-223, 157-164, 165-145) then Simon Kenton, 3-1 (150-128, 134-192, 163-182 156-161) before coming up short in the championship to reigning champ Pendleton County, 0-3 (197-158, 179-152, 183-138).
Dayton’s boys team is coached by Rebecca Holaday and team members include: Nick Baldwin, Zyon Barnes, Diem Donnerson, Brayden Hall, Nick Holaday, Connor Huebner, Connor Hurtt, DeAngelo Jimenez, Landon Jones, Russell McIntyre, Jose Sanchez, Enrique Soard and Cooper Sparks.
NEWPORT CENTRAL CATHOLIC GIRLS BOWLING TEAM

After earning the No. 2 seed in the first round of the 5th Region tournament, the Newport Central Catholic girls’ bowling team made their way through the bracket with wins over Highlands and Campbell County to win the region and remain undefeated.
The victory over Highlands was in four games, winning 3-1 (119-131,130-115,140-169, 114-132). They followed it up with a 3-0 win over the Camels (152-167,131-136,134-144).
The bowling team coached by Denny Barnes consists of: Mia Buemi , Rylee Clore, Eva Greene, Reagan Hill, Amy Kelly, Nora Kelly, Trinity Marron, Reilly McMahon, Katie Meyer, Allison Meyers, Avery Moeves and Annika Obert. Obert took home first place in the regional singles bowling tournament, Buemi finished fourth place individually as both qualified as individuals for the state tournament as well.
NewCath will head to the state bowling tournament that runs February 6-8 in Louisville.
CAMPBELL COUNTY BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM

The Camels won games over Walton-Verona and Scott, the victory over the Eagles clinching the No. 1 seed for the Camels for the 37th District tournament.
In the 65-60 win over the Bearcats, Aydan Hamilton, Jake Gross and Nathan Smith led the way with 22, 17 and 10 points, respectively. Hamilton led the way again in the contest with Scott, scoring 15 points, Jake Gross with 13, Garyn Jackson adding 10 and Jaidan Combs coming in with eight.
The win over Scott got them to 3-0 in district play and secured the No. 1 seed for the district tournament that starts the week of February 20. The Camels have won nine straight district championships. The victory also notched Aric Russell’s 400th career victory in boys basketball. He has 451 career victories now, winning 51 with the Newport girls in the late 1990’s, early 2000’s.
Campbell County is currently 14-9 on the season and ranked No. 3 in the 10th Region.
