Nestled above the Licking River and connecting Newport and Covington, the KY 8 bridge is a historic piece of infrastructure that serves a growing population. In November 2016, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet recognized the need for improvements to continue to serve both cities and its residents and began a redesign of this bridge.

Vision Zero Northern Kentucky held a public open house at the offices of Hub + Weber Architects on Nov. 15 to see the Devou Good Foundation-funded designs, gather public feedback and answer questions about the designs. Newport residents will have an opportunity to discuss the project on Nov. 17 at 935 Monmouth St. in Newport at 6 p.m.

The renderings all feature a pedestrian and cyclist-friendly design, widening the space for travelers who opt for biking and walking across in lieu of driving. With several high-profile accidents involving local vehicles and cyclists, recent focus has been heavily on pedestrian and cyclist safety. Just a few blocks from the 4th street bridge, Gloria San Miguel was killed while biking on the 11th street bridge in Newport in August.

An avid cyclist himself, Matt Butler, President of the Devou Good Foundation, knows that the time is right for the new bridge to facilitate citizens on both foot and wheels while fitting in with the environment.

Hub + Weber created three visions of the new bridge and Devou Good intends to unveil one of their own by early 2023.

“We did this because we want to elevate the designs,” Butler said. “This is a bridge that will stand for the next 100 years.” [Best_Wordpress_Gallery id=”51″ gal_title=”Bridge Redesigns Devou Good Foundation”]
