The state of Kentucky has launched a new website, StopScams.ky.gov, as part of a statewide initiative to combat fraud through increased public awareness, education and reporting tools.
According to a 2024 FBI report, Kentuckians lose more than $74 million annually to online scams. The website aims to reduce those losses by offering resources on how to identify and report scams, as well as guidance for victims on recovering lost funds. Visitors to the site can also sign up for scam alerts via email or text.
“Scams are mean and cruel, and they cost Kentuckians of all ages their hard-earned savings that should be going toward rent, groceries, retirement and more,” Beshear said in a news release. “While we’ve made progress in stopping scammers, a 2024 FBI report showed Kentuckians are losing more than $74 million each year to online scammers – something we won’t tolerate. Through this new website, educational events and more, we’re going to help protect Kentuckians by equipping them with the tools they need to stay safe.”
The initiative is being led by the Kentucky Public Protection Cabinet in partnership with other state agencies and organizations including the Better Business Bureau and the Kentucky chapter of the AARP.
Public Protection Cabinet Secretary Ray Perry said the prevalence of scams, fueled by the widespread use of digital technology and artificial intelligence, requires better tools and public engagement.
“The Public Protection Cabinet is excited to lead this initiative. With the integration of technology in our everyday lives and the emergence of Artificial Intelligence, scams are on the rise and coming at us in every direction,” Perry said in a news release.“ The best way to fight back is by empowering people to spot scams and sharing information about known scams.”
Officials from the Department of Financial Institutions, the Better Business Bureau, AARP Kentucky, and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet all voiced support for the initiative, highlighting the importance of cross-agency collaboration in stopping fraudulent schemes.
