Edgewood City Council spent much of Monday’s meeting discussing a proposed widening of Madison Pike at the Dudley Road intersection.
Madison Pike, also known as KY 17, is a state-owned road that runs through Kenton County. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, or KYTC, is in charge of maintenance on state-owned roads.
The work in question is planned for KY 536 from Williamswoods Drive in Independence to where it intersects with Madison Pike (KY 17), according to KYTC plans.
City officials have a meeting scheduled with state officials later this week to discuss specifics, but members discussed thoughts ahead of that discussion at Monday’s meeting.
While plans are outlined on KYTC’s website, some of the more specific parts of the proposal are leaving Edgewood officials on edge.
In recent plans, Councilmember Scott Spille said the proposal includes a proposal to “eliminate left turns onto 17, and there would be all right turns, and there would be multiple U-turn spots.”
The proposed concept resembles a restricted crossing U-turn, known as an RCUT design, which would restrict direct left turns onto KY-17 and instead require drivers to turn right and use designated U-turn locations to change direction.
“We were aware that there was gonna be reduced left turns,” Link said, adding that initial expectations did not include a full elimination of left turns at certain locations.
Residents and officials also raised concerns about how the changes could affect traffic flow for drivers accessing I-275 and surrounding routes, saying they want clearer answers on how vehicles would navigate the corridor under an RCUT system.
Officials said they hope KYTC will present the proposal either at a future council meeting or a public community forum before any final decisions are made.
“Our hope is, is to figure that out and try to do it,” Spille said. “And as soon as we do, we’ll communicate that with the council and make sure that everybody is updated.”
