The Newport community paused Wednesday night to remember Joseph and Mary Snow, siblings who died in a 2021 car accident, as the district awarded them posthumous diplomas.
Joseph Snow would have graduated from Newport High School this year, and Mary Snow was set to graduate in 2027.
Newport Schools Director of Pupil Personnel and Student Services Jennifer Stewart said at the May 27 school board meeting that the district was recognizing two students whose lives continue to leave lasting impressions on the school community. Although they are not here physically, Stewart said they remain forever a part of the Wildcat family.
“Tonight we recognize the milestones they should have had the opportunity to celebrate alongside their peers,” Stewart said. “A diploma represents more than academic achievement; it symbolizes hope, potential, perseverance, friendship, and the journey of growing up within a school community. While these students were unable to complete their journey, their memories have remained alive in the hearts of classmates, teachers, faculty, and loved ones throughout their years.”
The district played a video in remembrance of the siblings and their younger brother Victor Meyers, who was also a Newport student and died in the accident. Stewart said Meyers will also be honored when his graduation date arrives.
Newport Schools presented Joseph and Mary Snow’s mom, aunt, grandma and grandpa with their honorary degrees at the board meeting.
“As a district, we believe it is important to honor their place in this graduating class and to acknowledge the impact they continue to have on those who knew them and loved them,” Stewart said. “Their absence has never diminished the love and remembrance held for them by this community.”
